Consumers’ right to receive accurate information about the food they purchase has been formally set by the European Commission, whilst high food quality remains a fundamental goal of World Health Organization. Traditional Greek food products of increased quality such as olive oil and honey have a high added value for our diet and the country's economy as well. Nonetheless, such products are highly susceptible to several types of food fraud through practices that degrade their quality and / or mislead the consumers.
These practices include:
• intentional substitution/addition of unhealthy, cheaper and inferior quality substances,
• false claims regarding geographical/botanical origin and product mislabeling
